Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association announced that the Mets and Phillies will be playing in the 2018 Little League Classic. The game will be played at Historic Bowman Field in Williamsport, Pennsylvania on August 19, 2018. Players from both teams will attend the Little League World Series before playing their own game in front of a crowd made up of LLWS players, coaches, families, and local youth baseball and softball organizations. This will be a homecoming of sorts for Michael Conforto, who played in the Little League World Series as a youngster in 2004.
In recent years, Major League Baseball continues to try and branch out and reach different communities by holding games in different venues. In 2016, the Braves and Marlins played at Fort Bragg in front of a stadium full of servicemen and servicewomen and their families.
Then, the first annual Little League Classic was held earlier this year between the Cardinals and Pirates and it got off to a successful start. The Little Leaguers were afforded the opportunity to interact with the players they idolize, and the players got to go back to their roots and remember what it was like to be a kid playing a game.
