The Mets defeated the Reds 7-2 in the first game of a four game series at Citi Field. Brandon Nimmo continued to make the most of his recent increased playing time, going 3 for four with a walk, a double, and two home runs. Juan Lagares, Kevin Plawecki, Jose Reyes, and Dominic Smith all contributed offensively as well.
Rookie Tyler Mahle started for the Reds, and got knocked out of the game after just four innings, giving up three runs on six hits and four walks.
But the real story of the night was Matt Harvey, who went five innings and giving up two runs on five hits and one walk. Harvey was not his dominant old self, striking out only one, but looked better as the game went on, and looked about as strong as he’s looked all season. This must give Mets fans a glimmer of hope for Harvey’s future which, as of just a few days ago, looked absolutely bleak.
Josh Smoker, Jeurys Familia, and AJ Ramos all contributed scoreless innings in relief.
Full recap to follow.
