Meet the Mets
Brodie Van Wagenen made his first major personnel changes to the Mets’ coaching staff. Pat Roessler was popular with players, but that couldn’t save his job, as the Mets fired him with a year left on his contract. Ricky Bones will also not be back as bullpen coach next season.
Roessler was apparently on a family vacation in Iceland when he got the unwelcome news.
Van Wagenen was much more kind to Mets prospect Peter Alonso, who he considers a “priority for the organization.”
Van Wagenen told Mike Puma that wins in April count just as much as wins in September when asked about how soon Mets fans might see Alonso on the field.
Jacob deGrom, as expected, is a finalist for the Cy Young Award.
