Meet the Mets
It is the first day of March and that means the baseball season begins this month!
The Mets need to figure out the state of their rotation and Matt Harvey took a step forward with a solid first appearance of the spring.
Harvey still has a long way to go but this appearance was a promising first step.
Zack Wheeler might become the odd man out of the rotation and his first relief outing of the spring could have gone better.
It has been a long road for both Harvey and Wheeler since Wheeler’s debut in 2013, but perhaps the two can reclaim some of the promise they showed on “Super Tuesday.”
Jacob deGrom resumed throwing and he still hopes to be ready for Opening Day.
There was no update on Anthony Swarzak’s status but he still doesn’t believe his calf will be an issue.
All of these injuries so early in spring training is certainly disheartening but perhaps it is a good thing.
It is still early but some prospects have fared better than others so far in camp.
Around the National League East
Prospect Ronald Acuna had a good game for the Braves but they still ultimately came up short against the Mets.
The Marlins’ home run sculpture is here to stay no matter what the owner thinks of it.
The hiring of Gabe Kapler and the rest of the coaching staff could signify a new era of Phillies’ baseball. They could also experiment with outfield shifts this season.
The Nationals remain interested in signing Jake Arrieta. Washington lost to the Marlins in Tanner Roark’s second start of spring.
Around Major League Baseball
Old friend Lucas Duda signed with the Royals for a one-year deal worth $3.5 million.
Astros’ first baseman Yuli Gurriel underwent surgery on the hamate bone in his left hand and could be sidelined for five to eight weeks.
Yankees’ outfielder Clint Frazier is still battling concussion symptoms after knocking into the wall making a catch on Saturday.
After being struck by a line drive, Mariners’ ace Felix Hernandez is expected to miss only one spring start.
The Red Sox are asking the city to change Yawkey Way back to its original name of Jersey Street.
Yesterday at Amazin’ Avenue
Hopefully Jacob deGrom can remain dominant this season.
Brian Salvatore hopes David Wright can return to action this year.
This Date in Mets History
On this date in 1976, tensions started to build between Tom Seaver and the Mets. Seaver informed the Mets he would not report to spring training unless he received a new contract.
Happy Birthday Michael Conforto!
