Seth Lugo reportedly makes rotation; Jason Vargas to begin season on the DL

The roster appears almost set

Due to Zack Wheeler starting the season in the minor leagues, multiple sources confirm that Seth Lugo will be the Mets’ fifth starter at the start of the season. Due to being hit in his non-throwing hand with a line drive, Jason Vargas will likely begin the season on the disabled list.

As noted by MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo, unless Michael Conforto, who played in his first Grapefruit League game yesterday, somehow avoids the disabled list as well, it seems likely that infielder Phillip Evans will begin the season as the final piece of the Mets’ bench.

Along with the news of Rafael Montero’s need for Tommy John surgery, the Mets’ roster decisions are all falling into place on this last weekend of spring training. Aside from the last couple of bullpen spots, the team’s Opening Day roster seems more or less set.

Vargas reportedly will not require an extended rehabilitation period, meaning Lugo’s time in the rotation may be short.
