Despite the fact that they were held without a hit through six-and-two-thirds innings and scoreless through seven, the Mets beat the Marlins by a 4-1 score to complete a three-game sweep in Miami, extend their winning streak to eight games, and improve to 10-1 to begin the 2018 season.
Zack Wheeler was outstanding in his first major league start of the year. He went seven innings, struck out seven, walked one, and gave up just two hits—one of which was a solo home run by Miguel Rojas in the bottom of the first inning.
The Mets scored all of their runs against Miami’s bullpen, with pinch hitter Adrian Gonzalez driving in two with a single in the eighth to turn the Mets’ one-run deficit into a one-run lead. Wilmer Flores hit a ground-rule double to plate the third run of the night, and Todd Frazier’s sac fly in that inning brought home the fourth.
That was more than enough for the Mets’ bullpen, as Robert Gsellman struck out the side in a perfect eighth before Jerry Blevins and A.J. Ramos combined for a scoreless ninth. The only downside of the game was that Kevin Plawecki took a very hard fastball to the back of the hand. Here’s hoping he’s alright.
