The Mets finally lost their second game of the 2018 season, falling to the Brewers 5-1. After seemingly having an answer every time the opposing team scored a run, the Mets had no response to the Brewers on a cool and windy night at Citi Field.
Matt Harvey was on the mound for his third start of the season. After an excellent 1-2-3 first inning where he hit 95 MPH on the gun, he found trouble in each of the next four innings he pitched. For the most part, Harvey was able to escape relatively unscathed and limit the damage.
The Brewers got on the board in the top of the second thanks to a three-run home run by Jonathan Villar. After threatening in the third inning, the Brewers hit another home run off Harvey, this one a solo shot by catcher Jett Bandy to put the Brewers up 4-0. The Brewers put the icing on the cake in the ninth inning with Orlando Arcia hitting a solo homer off of Hansel Robles, putting the Brewers up 5-1.
The Mets’ offense was quiet for most of the night. Brewers starting pitcher Chase Anderson worked through the Mets’ lineup with ease, facing the minimum through the first four innings. In the bottom of the fifth, Amed Rosario singled for the Mets first hit of the night, followed by a Todd Frazier walk. The Mets scored their only run of the night in the bottom of the sixth inning on a Yoenis Cespedes bloop single scoring Michael Conforto.
The lone bright spot for the Mets on the night was Paul Sewald. Sewald, in just his third appearance of 2018, pitched three perfect innings in relief, striking out five.
