The Mets’ two-game losing streak against Washington was snapped in dramatic fashion tonight in their 11-5 victory over the Nats. After falling victim to a late comeback in the first game of the series, the Mets had some magic of their own in the form of a nine run eighth inning.
Steven Matz started the game, but didn’t last long, only going four innings before being pinch hit for. While the bullpen did give up two runs over the course of the next five innings, they kept the team in the game.
The star of tonight’s game was the awoken offense of the Mets. After a fairly slow first seven innings, they exploded for nine runs in the eighth to put things back in their favor. Four different Mets drove in a run that inning before it was all said and done. The rally was capped off by a majestic grand slam off the bat of the slumping Yoenis Cespedes to put the Mets up by seven. Seth Lugo closed out the game - despite giving up Ryan Zimmermann’s second home run of the night - and sent the fans home happy.
