Meet the Mets
After suffering another disheartening loss at the hands of the Braves on Saturday, the Mets got a bit of a reprieve from Mother Nature. The game was rained out and will now be a doubleheader on Memorial Day.
With Sunday’s rainout, everyone on the pitching staff will get pushed back a day but Jason Vargas will still make his debut against the Padres on Saturday. Beyond that the Mets might make some changes to the back end of the rotation.
It was yet another spectacular bullpen blowup that cost the Mets the win on Saturday and pitching coach Dave Eiland wants the bullpen to focus on throwing strikes.
The extra day off could also help Jay Bruce who has hit a rough patch at the plate.
Yoenis Cespedes is another one who is struggling at the plate and he thinks the lack of golf is to blame.
Bruce, Cespedes, and Michael Conforto will need to turn it around soon if the Mets want to get back on track.
Matt Harvey’s struggles landed him in the bullpen but there are some examples he can follow if he wants to rejoin the rotation.
It is hard for Wilmer Flores to adjust to his limited playing time but still tries to make the most of his opportunity when it arises.
Around the National League East
Jose Bautista could join the Braves sometime on their upcoming road trip which begins today.
Caleb Smith had a solid start for the Marlins but they still lost to the Brewers with the help of former Marlin Christian Yelich.
The Phillies completed a sweep of the Pirates with a walkoff win in extra innings.
The Nationals finally placed Anthony Rendon the DL after he injured himself on April 13 and hasn’t appeared in a game since. Washington’s bullpen couldn’t stop the bleeding in the loss to the Dodgers.
Around Major League Baseball
Strikeouts are once again up across the majors and it looks like this is a trend that is here to stay.
The Rockies placed outfielder Carlos Gonzalez on the disabled list with a hamstring strain.
Giants’ first baseman Brandon Belt set a new modern record with a 21-pitch at bat against Jaime Barria.
The Cardinals placed Adam Wainwright on the DL with elbow inflammation.
There was a scary moment for Kris Bryant when he was hit in the head with a pitch but he appears to be ok.
White Sox reliever Danny Farquhar underwent a complicated procedure to relieve swelling on his brain after he suffered a hemorrhage during Saturday’s game.
