The Opening Day rematch between the Mets and Cardinals was a bit more suspenseful than the first game as the Mets lost 4-3 in 13 innings . Noah Syndergaard was magnificent, going 7.1 innings, giving up only one earned run and striking out seven. But, the defense let Syndergaard down as some shoddy fielding allowed runs to score in the seventh and eighth.
The offense today was led by Yoenis Cespedes whop drove in two of the Mets’ three runs, one on a double in the first and another on a sacrifice fly in the seventh. The most important run of the game came without putting the ball in play as Jose Lobaton walked with the bases loaded against Luke Gregerson in the tenth inning to give the Mets a 3-2 lead, but that wouldn’t last for long.
The Mets’ bullpen had some problems of its own as Robert Gsellman and Jeurys Familia both surrendered the lead late in the game. Gsellman gave up his run on a Tommy Pham single while Familia allowed a run to score on Jose Martinez’s double. Dexter Fowler hit a walk-off single against Paul Sewald to seal the game in the thirteenth inning.
Full recap to follow.
