Jacob deGrom twirled another gem for the Mets tonight, as they take the series opener from the Padres. deGrom threw 7 1⁄3 scoreless innings, striking out eight and shrinking his ERA to 2.06 on the year. Mickey Callaway pushed deGrom over 100 pitches to give the Mets some length and give the bullpen a break.
Asdrubal Cabrera and—believe it or not—Jose Lobaton provided the offensive power tonight, each with two hits. Cabrera’s three-run blast off of Craig Stammen in the sixth was the decisive blow in the game. Juan Lagares, getting the rare start, also provided two hits and scored two of the Mets’ five runs.
Mickey Callaway used a combination of Jerry Blevins and A.J. Ramos to get out of the eighth inning, after Jacob deGrom gave up a single to Wil Meyers to end his night. Blevins almost made the game a lot more interesting by giving up a long out to Eric Hosmer, who was robbed of a home run by a leaping grab from Michael Conforto.
Callaway then turned to Matt Harvey to close out the game. Harvey looked very shaky, but managed to get the job done to secure the win for the Mets.
