San Diego may be a lovely town, but it was downright hellish for Jason Vargas in his first start of the 2018 season. After striking out Wil Myers leading off the game, Vargas surrendered a single to Eric Hosmer followed by a two-run bomb to Christian Villanueva to put the Mets in a quick 2-0 hole.
As can happen in this city, things really escalated quickly thereafter. Padre batters continued to rip line drives all over the field against Vargas, plating two more in the inning on a Manuel Margot triple to center that Juan Lagares could not track down. Vargas ultimately surrendered nine runs on nine hits over 3.2 innings—and it could have been worse, as Lagares later robbed Villanueva of a second home run in the bottom of the second inning.
Meanwhile, the offense struggled with the funky windup and fascinating churve (curve/slider hybrid) of rookie Joey Lucchesi, who kept the Mets off the scoreboard until a Yoenis Cespedes home run in the sixth.
Full recap to follow.
