The Mets defeated the Padres 14-2 this afternoon in San Diego, on the back of a good performance by Zack Wheeler. Wheeler, who went five innings, struck out nine, walked two, and gave up six hits. Paul Sewald relieved him, going two innings and striking out three.
The Mets scored in each of the three innings, piling on Padres’ starter Bryan Mitchell, knocking him from the game with two outs in the fifth. After three scoreless innings, the Mets’ offense exploded, scoring five runs in the seventh and five in the eighth.
Adrian Gonzalez had a huge day, doubling in two and hitting an opposite field three run home run. Todd Frazier and Jose Reyes each hit home runs as well. Aside from Wheeler, every started collected at least two hits.
Full recap to follow.
