Mets 3, Nationals 2—Cold Comfort

Mets claim early season series victory over their division rivals in chilly Washington.

MLB: New York Mets at Washington Nationals Brad Mills-USA TODAY Sports

The Mets came back on two separate occasions from a one run deficit in the middle innings, holding on to defeat the Nationals 3-2 in a cold afternoon affair in Washington, D.C. The victory was the fourth straight for New York, as they start the season 6-1 and claim a huge early season series victory over the preseason N.L. East division favorites.

Steven Matz looked strong early, and surrendered only one unearned run—helped along by an incredible Juan Lagares throw to nail Brian Goodwin at home in the second. However, Matz threw 93 pitches through five innings, and was lifted for a pinch hitter in the sixth.

Things didn’t look great when Bryce Harper took Hansel Robles deep to lead off the bottom of the sixth to put the Nationals back in front 2-1, but as they have done so often this young season, the Mets bounced right back. Amed Rosario led off the top of the seventh with a single, and promptly streaked home on an Asdrubal Cabrera double to tie the game. Cabrera came around to score to go-ahead run on a Todd Frazier ground out.

From there, the bullpen held the fort, with Jeurys Familia recording a five-out save to lock down the happy recap. The Mets will look to continue their roll and earn a sweep of their division rivals behind Matt Harvey tomorrow night on ESPN.

Full recap to follow.
