The Mets held on and beat the Nationals 6-5 in extra innings to complete a three-game sweep of their National League East rivals.
In the very early going, the Mets fell behind 2-0 when Bryce Harper took Matt Harvey deep in the first. But that lead was erased and reversed when Adrian Gonzalez hit a grand slam against Tanner Roark in the top of the third. The Mets led for a while after that, with Pedro Severino plating a run in the fourth to bring the Nats within one and Asdrubal Cabrera hitting a solo shot to answer that run in the top of the fifth.
Trea Turner singled in a run in the bottom of the fifth to cut the Mets’ lead to 5-4. Michael Taylor tied things up with a single in the seventh. But the Mets’ bullpen managed to prevent the Nationals from scoring again through twelve innings, and Yoenis Cespedes’s soft single in the top of the twelfth plated the game-deciding run.
