Final Score: Blue Jays 12, Mets 1 — The wheels came off

A rainy, miserable day at Queens.

MLB: Toronto Blue Jays at New York Mets Noah K. Murray-USA TODAY Sports

The Mets got walloped by the Blue Jays, 12-1, after scoring 12 runs of their own just last night.

Zack Wheeler started for the Mets, and looked great early on, aside from a first inning home run to Justin Smoak. Wheeler had six strikeouts through the first three innings, but the wheels came off (pun slightly intended) after an 18-minute delay to deal with a soaking wet infield.

Over the fourth and fifth innings, Wheeler gave up five more runs, including a two-run home run to Teoscar Hernandez. Wheeler went four plus innings, striking out seven, walking three, and giving up seven hits.

The Mets, after putting up a dozen runs last night, were blanked by J.A. Happ, who cruised through his start, giving up two hits and striking out 10 over seven scoreless innings.

A.J. Ramos and Buddy Baumann contributed to the Jays routing, each allowing three runs to score.

Brandon Nimmo provided the sole Mets offense with a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Full recap to follow.
