Jason Vargas led the way with a bounce-back start, as the Mets shutout the Marlins in a 2-0 victory. Vargas was fantastic, striking out seven over five innings and allowing only three baserunners. Five relievers combined to complete the shutout, with AJ Ramos getting out of a jam in the sixth and turning a fine double play in the seventh and Seth Lugo being saved by a diving catch from Brandon Nimmo in the eighth. Jeurys Familia worked around a one out double to secure his 13th save of the season.
It was a quiet night for the Mets’ bats, but they did just enough to get the win. Amed Rosario practically flew around the bases to score from first on a double from Asdrubal Cabrera in the third. Wilmer Flores tacked on some insurance in the seventh with a nice piece of hitting, taking an 0-2 fastball to the opposite field to drive in an unearned run. While he didn’t factor in the scoring, Michael Conforto stayed hot, notching two more singles
The win is the Mets’ fourth in a row as well as Jason Vargas’ first as a Met. After a month-long stretch of futility, the Mets finally have a decent win streak going, and they’ll look to continue the good times with Zack Wheeler on the mound tomorrow against lefty Caleb Smith.
Full recap to follow.
