The Mets blew two leads, used more of their bullpen than they would have liked, and may have lost Wilmer Flores to injury in today’s 8-7 loss to the Brewers. In what was a very back and forth game, the Mets’ bullpen did them in yet again.
Zack Wheeler started for the Mets and, despite a rocky start, went six innings, gave up six hits, struck out six, walked two, and gave up four runs. Wheeler escaped major trouble in the first inning, but was done in by a Jesus Aguilar home run in the third, which tied the game at four.
The Mets scored four of their runs in the top of the second inning, with five straight batters reaching base before an out was recorded. The Mets took the lead when Michael Conforto struck a
home run double to center field, and then scored on a Jay Bruce single in the fifth. In the seventh, Asdrubal Cabrera launched a home run to left field, putting the Mets up 6-4.
The bottom of the seventh saw the wheels come off, with a borderline ball four call to Aguilar starting a two-out rally that saw the Mets burn through three relief pitchers and allow four runs to score.
A ninth inning home run by pinch hitter Devin Mesoraco gave one last glimpse of hope, but ultimately proved to be too little, too late for the Mets.
