With Jason Vargas throwing five scoreless innings against the division rival Braves, the Mets concluded their four-game series in Atlanta with a 4-1 victory. Brandon Nimmo, Amed Rosario, and Adrian Gonzalez were the stars of the show on the offensive side, as all four of the Mets’ runs involved at least one of those three in some way.
Tim Peterson made his major league debut in relief of Vargas, who was pulled despite having a low pitch count through the aforementioned scoreless frames. Peterson threw a scoreless sixth and gave up a solo home run in the seventh, but it was a solid major league debut.
And after that, encouragingly, Jeurys Familia was called upon to face the Braves’ most dangerous hitters in the eighth. He got into some trouble with that assignment, but Amed Rosario and Asdrubal Cabrera turned a gorgeous double play to get him out of that inning unscathed. And then Robert Gsellman pitched the ninth for an easy save.
