Final Score: Rockies 2, Mets 0 — Gnome gnight ruined

Matz looked sharp, but the offense was dull.

MLB: Colorado Rockies at New York Mets Andy Marlin-USA TODAY Sports

The Mets fell to the Rockies tonight, 2-0 at Citi Field. Despite a strong starting pitching performance, the Mets were shut out yet again.

Steven Matz had his best start this season, going six complete innings for the first time since July 3rd of 2017. Aside from a solo home run given up to Nolan Arenado, Matz looked quite good. Matz gave up only three hits and one walk, while striking out five.

The bullpen also looked better than it has as of late, with Paul Sewald looking excellent in the seventh, and Robert Gsellman looking similarly impressive in the eighth. In the ninth, Gsellman hit a batter, gave up a weak single, and an intentional walk to load the bases with two outs. Pinch hitter David Dahl dunked a ball into left field, scoring one. It would’ve been two had the gun of Yoenis Cespedes nailing Chris Ianetta at the plate.

The Mets had plenty of chances to score, putting men on base in all but two of the first eight innings, but could not combine to score. Rockies starter Chad Bettis was quite impressive over his seven innings, striking out just two, but limited the Mets to soft contact and got a few lucky breaks in the form of double plays. Adam Ottavino pitched an effective eighth, and Wade Davis, after a marathon outing last night, closed the game out for Colorado.

Full recap to follow.
