In a disappointingly unsurprising development, the Mets lost 6-3 to the Arizona Diamondbacks. This loss is their third in a row and eleventh in twelve games. Jason Vargas had an okay start, going five innings while giving up three runs and striking out five. Vargas surrendered his three runs on a two-run home run by the red-hot Paul Goldschmidt and a solo home run by David Peralta.
The Mets’ offense got off to a quick start when Brandon Nimmo hit a solo home run as the third batter of the game. The Mets’ next run was scored when Michael Conforto added a home run of his own in the sixth inning, bringing the Mets within one. This game marked the first time since the first of June that the Mets had scored runs in multiple innings in one game.
Following Vargas, Hansel Robles made his first appearance since the second of June and pitched a solid inning and two-thirds. But, Jerry Blevins and Paul Sewald struggled to get the last out as Blevins couldn’t get anyone out and Sewald walked in a run before ending the seventh inning.
The Mets went back to work in the eighth inning when Amed Rosario cranked a home run into the seats in left to bring the Mets within one, again. That was all they did as a fly out and a double play ended the inning. The Diamondbacks drove in two more runs in the bottom of the inning and shut down the Mets in the ninth to seal their victory.
