Final Score: Mets 5, Diamondbacks 3 — Father’s Day is saved!

What is this feeling...is it joy?

MLB: New York Mets at Arizona Diamondbacks Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

The Mets dropped the series finale against the Diamondbacks, 3-2 came back with two outs in the ninth inning and won the game 5-3 at Chase Field this afternoon. After showing some offensive signs of life last night, the Mets waited until the last possible moment to bring the thunder yet again.

Zach Wheeler started for the Mets, and continued his solid season with a six-inning, two earned run performance, striking out eight and walking two. Wheeler’s outing would most certainly have turned out differently if not for a blown third strike call that extended the fourth inning and, ultimately, led to the the Diamondbacks taking the lead 2-1.

The sole pre-ninth inning Mets run came in the first inning, when Brandon Nimmo led off the game with a double and eventually scored on a Todd Frazier sacrifice fly. The bats would then go silent until the ninth inning, where a surefire foul ball off the bat of Jose Reyes was picked up by Alex Avila. After stealing second, Reyes scored on a long double by Jose Bautista after a misplay by Jon Jay. Back to back home runs from Nimmo and Asdrubal Cabrera put the Mets up 5-3.

Despite a truly sloppy play by Dominic Smith, Robert Gsellman was able to get through the inning unscathed, saving the game for the Mets and dads everywhere.

Full recap to follow.
