2018 Mets draft profile: Chandler Avant

With their thirtieth selection in the 2018 draft, the Mets selected Chandler Avant, a second baseman from Alabama.

Name: Chandler Avant

Born: Troy, Alabama

Age: 22 (7/11/95)

Height/Weight: 5’11”/170 lbs.

Position: 2B

Bats/Throws: R/R

School: University of Alabama

When Chandler Avant graduated from Pike Liberal Arts School in Troy, Alabama and left to attend the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, he was a big fish going from a little pond to a big lake. The freshman was by far the best player on his team and one of the best in Alabama. He did not skip a beat when he arrived at Alabama, impressing during fall camp and earning Coach Bohannon’s trust. Playing all over the field, at second, third, and left, Avant hit .266/.324/.298. Over his next three years at Alabama, he would progressively get better, hitting .278 /.319/.406 in an injury-shortened 2016 season, .286/.341/.394 in 2017, and .295/.401/.411 in his final year with the Red Tide.

At the plate, Avant uses a big leg kick. His short swing is smooth and level, and he has sneaky power to his pull side. He is a bit slow getting out of the box, but Avant is otherwise an average-to-above-average runner. Avant has played all over the field during his time in high school and at the University of Alabama, but he profiles best at second base. He has a steady glove and a strong arm, hitting the mid-to-high-80s on radar guns.
