One bad inning doomed Jacob deGrom and the Mets in their 5-2 loss against the Marlins. deGrom was cruising until an infield single and home run by Brian Anderson tied the game in the sixth. The Mets’ ace had a chance to escape the inning without further damage but some indecision by Wilmer Flores on a weak ground ball brought home the third run of the inning.
Robert Gsellman relieved deGrom and was also victimized by defense. Amed Rosario made an error that prolonged the inning and JT Realmuto made them pay. He hit a two-run double that extended the Marlins’ lead.
For the second straight day the Marlins started a youngster making their debut, and the Mets again struggled. Only Jose Bautista and Todd Frazier were able to get to Pablo Lopez. They both hit solo home runs but that was pretty much it. The team had limited chances but squandered them every time.
This was just another display of a bad team playing badly and the standings now reflect that.
