Final Score: Yankees 4, Mets 1—Again? Yes, again.

Jacob deGrom made one mistake all night, but it was enough for him to take the loss in the series opener.

Brandon Nimmo led off the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run and that was the only run the Mets’ anemic offense would manage all night, once again giving Jacob deGrom virtually no room for error.

The errors came on the part of the Mets’ defense. In the top of the sixth inning, Masahiro Tanaka hit a grounder that Adrian Gonzalez botched to put Tanaka on base. Gleyber Torres then hit a single and deGrom walked Brett Gardner to load the bases. Aaron Judge hit a fly ball to right field that was not terribly deep, but Tanaka was able to score on a weak throw from Jay Bruce, erasing the Mets’ skinny lead. Tanaka, who had matched deGrom until that point, was forced out of the game on the play, as his hamstrings tightened up on him running home.

Jacob deGrom was excellent again, heading into eighth having surrendered just the unearned run. But he left a pitch in the zone to Brett Gardner, and Gardner made him pay, smacking a two-run homer over the right field wall to put the Yankees up 3-1. At that point, the all too familiar feeling of the game being over settled in. Paul Sewald gave the Yankees an insurance run in the ninth in the form of a Giancarlo Stanton solo home run.

The Mets attempted to stage a rally in the bottom of the ninth against Aroldis Chapman. Brandon Nimmo was hit by a pitch and Asdrubal Cabrera reached base on an infield hit. With one out, Todd Frazier smacked a ball down the line that seemed destined for the left field corner, but Miguel Andujar made a nice diving stop to get the force out at second and save a run. Jay Bruce then popped out to seal another yet another defeat in a well-pitched game by Jacob deGrom.

Full recap to follow.
