The Mets won the series finale in Miami this afternoon, defeating the Marlins 5-2. After an absolutely abysmal June, the Mets turned the page on a new month, and secured a win behind a solid pitching performance by their home-grown lefty.
Kevin Plawecki drove in the first run of the game with a double to center field in the second inning, plating Todd Frazier. One inning later, Asdrubal Cabrera hit a solo home run to put the Mets up 2-0.
Steven Matz started for the Mets, and went five and a third innings, only surrendering one run that, partially, was caused by an error he, himself, committed. Matz struck out six, walked two, and had three errors committed behind him. He also knocked in the Mets’ runs on a single in the fourth inning.
The Mets scored their fourth run in the eighth when Lewis Brinson dropped a ball hit by Todd Frazier, which allowed Cabrera to score. Frazier then scored on a poor throw from J.T. Realmuto to attempt to throw behind Frazier, but the ball hit him and careened into left field.
Cameron Maybin hit his first home run of the season - the last player with regular playing time to hit one this season - giving the Marlins their second run in the eighth inning.
