MLB: New York Mets at Miami Marlins Jasen Vinlove-USA TODAY Sports

Meet the Mets

After one of the worst months in franchise history, Steven Matz and the Mets turned the page with the start of a new month. Despite some awful defense behind him, Matz held the Marlins in check and pitched in some offense as well. Asdrubal Cabrera hit a mammoth home run and the rest of the offense tacked on a couple late to help give the team a much needed victory.

Steven Matz has made great strides this season and has gotten better at dealing with mistakes that happen within the course of a game.

Brandon Nimmo has been a bit of a slump ever since getting hit on the hand with a pitch but the outfielder insists that physically he is fine.

Dominic Smith has been out of the lineup with a sore wrist, but he is expected to return to action against the Blue Jays.

The season has reached its halfway point and for the Mets all they can do now is look forward and find tiny positives to build on.

Jacob deGrom seemingly hit a low point after his last start but the coaching staff made sure it didn’t snowball from there with the ace.

Noah Syndergaard and Jason Vargas are both set to take another step forward as they work their way back from injury.

The Mets are hoping the arms they acquired at last year’s deadline will start paying off in the near future.

Around the National League East

The Braves finished off a sweep of the Cardinals in St. Louis.

Starlin Castro could be a solid trade chip for the Marlins at the deadline.

It took 13 innings but the Phillies took down the Nationals 4-3.

The Nationals dropped three out of four to the Phillies in Philadelphia.

Around Major League Baseball

Kevin Pillar made a ridiculous catch in the Blue Jays’ loss against the Tigers.

The trade market at the deadline could mirror this year’s slow offseason market.

The Dodgers are in the market for relief help and could find a trade partner in the Marlins.

The Cubs placed reliever Brian Duensing on the disabled list with shoulder fatigue.

David Price again struggled at Yankee Stadium in the Red Sox’s loss.

This Date in Mets History

The 1969 Mets won a fourteen inning thriller over the Cardinals that set off another win streak for the Miracle Mets.
