The Mets dropped the first game of their series against the Padres, 3-2 tonight at Citi Field. Jacob deGrom made his first start since his All-Star Game appearance last Tuesday, and continued to do what he does so well: goes deep into games, strikes out a bunch, and keeps his team in the game. Unfortunately, bad defense behind him put deGrom behind the eight ball for much of the game.
In the fifth inning, Christian Villanueva hit a line drive to right field, which bounced off of Jose Bautista’s glove, putting Villanueva on second. After stealing third, he would score on a Freddy Galvis single. Manuel Margot then tripled, scoring Galvis. One inning later, Wil Myers scored on an Amed Rosario error, putting the Padres up 3-1.
The Mets loaded the bases in the sixth, but only scored one run, on a Jose Reyes infield single. Despite getting a baserunner on with no one out, the Mets couldn’t score in the ninth.
Full recap to follow.
