The Mets got walked off in Pittsburgh.

MLB: New York Mets at Pittsburgh Pirates Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The Mets lost a back-and-forth affair to the Pirates 5-4, as David Freese walked it off with a hit off Tim Peterson with the bases loaded in the ninth. Freese drove in all of the Pirates’ five runs.

The Mets jumped out to an early lead against Ivan Nova when Michael Conforto blasted a three-run homer in the first inning. The Pirates responded in the bottom of the second off Jason Vargas, making his first start back from the disabled list. David Freese hit a two-run homer to bring the Pirates within one.

Seth Lugo surrendered the Mets’ lead in the fifth, after coming in for Jason Vargas when Vargas walked a batter with one out. Vargas left with the lead, but did not last long enough to qualify for the win, going just 4 13 innings. Overall it was a mediocre outing for Vargas, as he was helped out by the Mets’ defense, but he kept the Mets in the game. Lugo was able to get the second out, but then gave up an infield hit to Placido Polanco and a walk to Elias Diaz to load the bases. Freese then struck again with an RBI single to give the Pirates a 4-3 lead.

The Mets tied the game up in the bottom of the sixth when Jose Reyes lined out with the bases loaded and Jordan Luplow skied the throw to the plate, allowing Michael Conforto to come home to score.

The game remained knotted at four with Tyler Bashlor throwing two scoreless innings of relief and Jacob Rhame, Jerry Blevins, and Anthony Swarzak combining for a scoreless eighth. The bullpen couldn’t hold on long enough to send the game into extras, however, as Tim Peterson loaded the bases with nobody out and Freese struck for the third time of the night to win it for the Pirates.
