The Mets beat the Pirates 1-0 in Pittsburgh this afternoon, and Zack Wheeler was the sole reason why. The righty threw six scoreless innings, and he drove in the only run of the game with a double in the top of the fifth.
Wheeler struck out seven, walked one, and gave up five hits in those six innings of work. After he was pinch hit for in the top of the seventh, Seth Lugo threw a pair of scoreless innings, and Anthony Swarzak finished things off with a scoreless ninth.
The top five batters in the Mets’ lineup went without a hit, and Brandon Nimmo’s walk was the only time any of those five reached base. Austin Jackson had a pair of hits in his first start as a Met, and Kevin Plawecki and Luis Guillorme had one hit apiece.
Full recap to follow.
