The Mets no longer have the league’s best record in July thanks to another bullpen meltdown.

The Mets were hoping the start of a new month would bring them a clean slate and more success than June did, but one thing the calendar change could not bring them was a better bullpen. Another bullpen meltdown turned a 6-1 lead in the seventh into a 8-6 loss in Toronto on Tuesday night. The bullpen allowed five runs in the seventh to tie the game at six, and a two-run homer by Lourdes Gurriel Jr. in the eighth was the death knell, propelling the Jays ahead to stay. The Mets got the lead run to the plate in the ninth, but stranded the runners on base.

Before that, as Zack Wheeler got the start and continued his recent run of success. Wheeler tossed 6.1 strong innings, only allowing two runs on three hits. Wheeler necessarily didn’t have his best stuff, walking three and only striking out five, but it was good enough to get the job done tonight. Unfortunately, the bullpen couldn’t finish the job for him.

The Mets had one of their most powerful offensive displays in recent weeks, knocking three home runs in hitter-friendly Rogers Centre. Asdrubal Cabrera, Devin Mesoraco, and Wilmer Flores all went deep, but it wasn’t enough.

Full recap to follow.
