Meet the Mets

Zack Wheeler had one of his best games of the season in the series finale against the Pirates. Not only did he pitch six shutout innings, he also drove in the Mets’ only run with a booming double. Once Wheeler was out of the game, the bullpen held and the Mets earned a series split with the Pirates.

Zack Wheeler was everything the Mets needed him to be against the Pirates but his future remains cloudy as the Trade Deadline approaches, although they seem to be leaning toward keeping him.

Anthony Swarzak picked up the save and has looked very good in his new role.

Devin Mesoraco was acquired earlier this season and could be on the move again.

Should Mesoraco be dealt, Kevin Plawecki will get another opportunity to be the starter.

Michael Conforto was held out of the lineup Sunday since he was dealing with some soreness in his thumb.

Jacob deGrom’s latest effort was again wasted and even non-Mets fans are starting to take notice.

Around the National League East

It was a busy day for the Braves. The saga surrounding the ridiculous comments made about the Dodgers’ batting practice attire continued. Met-killer Chipper Jones was inducted into the Hall of Fame. They acquired reliever Brad Brach from the Orioles and they are still interested in Chris Archer. The Braves still have plenty of prospects if they want to remain buyers in the market. Starter Sean Newcomb came within one out of throwing a no-hitter against the Dodgers, but afterward he had to apologize for some offensive tweets that surfaced after the game.

Jose Urena shut down the Nationals to help lead the Marlins to a 5-0 win and a series split with Washington.

The Phillies dropped yet another game against the Reds and old friend Asdrubal Cabrera struggled in his first two games with Philadelphia. Now teammates, Cabrera and Edubray Ramos buried the hatchet since Ramos took exception to Cabrera’s walk-off celebration two years ago.

The Nationals fell below .500 with their loss to the Marlins. With their poor performance against Miami, the ballclub has some decisions to make with the Trade Deadline just on the horizon. Just like Newcomb, some of Trea Turner’s ugly tweets surfaced after the game and he too issued an apology.

Around Major League Baseball

The Hall of Fame Class of 2018 was inducted into Cooperstown with a ceremony in upstate New York. There were many highlights from the induction that honored some of the best in their generation.

Trade rumors have been surrounding Adam Jones, but the Oriole outfielder is most likely staying with the club.

Jose Altuve landed on the DL for the first time in his career with a knee injury.

Nathan Eovaldi made his Red Sox debut and was dominant for his new club.

J.A. Happ also won in his debut for the Yankees.

This Date in Mets History

The infamous Scott Kazmir for Victor Zambrano trade took place on this date in 2004. Also on that same day Jose Bautista was a Met. It took him awhile to actually play a game for the Mets since when he was acquired from the Royals he was then sent to the Pirates along with Ty Wigginton for Kris Benson.
