Ian Mejia’s brother and father both played baseball in their native Mexico, and Ian Mejia hopes to follow in their footsteps. He did not have the best senior year in 2018, posting a 4.30 ERA in 29.1 innings, allowing 22 hits, walking 18, and striking out 28, but he has a resume of success. Over the course of his entire high school career at Sahuarita High School, he has a cumulative 2.58 ERA in 146.1 innings, allowing 115 hits, walking 88, and striking out 143.
Standing 6’4” and weighing 175 pounds with long arms and legs and a thin frame, Mejia shows signs of plenty of projection. Throwing from a three-quarters arm angle, he gets plenty of arm extension, whipping forward and exploding off the rubber. He creates downward angle on the ball.
Mejia has an electric arm, as the 18-year-old has a fastball currently sits in the high-80s-to-low-90s fastball, topping out as high as 94 MPH. He complements it with a low-80s slider, a high-70s curveball, and a lot-to-mid-70s changeup.
Mejia has a commitment to University of Arizona and will be honoring that commitment.
