Jose Bautista hit the first walk-off home run of his career and it was a grand slam!

The broken record plays on and on for Jacob deGrom, as he put together another fantastic start and once again walked away with a no-decision. However, this time it was a happy ending for the Mets, as Jose Bautista hit a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the ninth off Chaz Roe to seal the victory.

The Mets’ only run prior to the Bautista slam came in the third inning off Ryan Yarbrough, pitching in relief of Rays’ “opener” Ryne Stanek, who opened the game with two scoreless innings. Rays’ shortstop Willy Adames made a wide throw after fielding a Brandon Nimmo grounder that first baseman Jake Bauers was unable to handle and was charged with the tough luck error that allowed Nimmo to advance to second on the play. Jose Bautista then walked and Asdrubal Cabrera followed that with a single to put the Mets ahead 1-0.

deGrom’s only mistake all night came in the top of the fifth, as Adames earned his redemption by hitting a solo home run to tie the game. Overall, deGrom went eight innings and gave up just four hits and the one run, striking out eight Rays hitters.

Things got dicey for Jeurys Familia in the ninth, but he was able to escape the jam and the game remained knotted at one apiece, until the Mets started a rally in the ninth with a Todd Frazier walk to lead off the inning. Devin Mesoraco then made a couple of bunt attempts to draw in the infield, but then slapped a single past the third baseman. Amed Rosario followed that with a perfect sacrifice bunt to advance the runners. Dominic Smith came to the plate as a pinch hitter and tapped one back to the mound for the second out. But then Bautista delivered the epic walk-off shot to avoid extra innings and give the Mets a feel good win.

The Mets have now won two games straight. And even if they couldn’t get a win for deGrom, they were able to take advantage of one of his many brilliant outings. It’s a start.

Full recap to follow.
