The New York Mets dropped the finale of their home series against the Tampa Bay Rays today, going down without a fight, 9-0. After a couple of games where they managed to keep the game close, this was a bloody, ugly affair.
Chris Flexen started for the Mets today, and barely got through nine outs. In his three innings of work, he gave up five earned runs on five hits and three walks. C.J. Cron hit a three-run home run in the top of the first, which really set the tone for the day. Chris Beck and Paul Sewald would each give up runs in relief, putting the Mets in a hole they could not dig out from.
There was no digging to be found, though, as Rays starter Nathan Eovaldi sufficiently blanked the Mets all afternoon. He was perfect through six innings, until Brandon Nimmo singled in the top of the seventh to break up the bid. Nimmo, who also walked in the ninth inning, would be one of only three Met baserunners today, along with Michael Conforto, who drew an eighth inning walk, and Devin Mesoraco, who singled in the ninth.
Yuck.
