2018 Mets draft profile: Nick Zona

With their thirty-eighth selection in the 2018 draft, the Mets selected Nick Zona, a shortstop from Virginia.

Name: Nick Zona

Born: Mechanicsville, Virginia

Age: 18 (07/09/99)

Height/Weight: 6’2”/180 lbs.

Position: SS

Bats/Throws: R/R

School: Hanover High School (Mechanicsville, Virginia)

Despite dealing with nagging injuries all spring, Nick Zona manage to hit .473, while playing both second base and shortstop. Not done there, he pitched 27.1 innings for the Hanover Indians, posing a 3.07 ERA.

At the plate, Zona stands with a wide, open stance. He uses a leg kick to load, plants his leg early and then swings, losing the energy generated from his lower half. His 6’2”, 180-pound frame is unlikely to add too much more muscle, so he may be better suited quieting his swing and putting more of an emphasis on making contact with the ball.

Defensively, Zona has spent much more time at second base than shortstop, but that does not mean that he does not have the tools to play the position. He plays second base in deference to another player on his team. The athletic Zona has a plus arm and plus speed, giving him the range to get to balls and the arm strength to gun them down.

He has a commitment to James Madison University.
