2018 Mets draft profile: Kody Darcy

With their thirty-ninth selection in the 2018 draft, the Mets selected Kody Darcy, a shortstop from Washington.

Name: Kody Darcy

Born: Kent, Washington

Age: 18 (06/17/99)

Height/Weight: 6’1”/175 lbs.

Position: SS

Bats/Throws: R/R

School: Kentridge High School (Kent, Washington)

In his four years playing baseball at Kentridge High School, the closest Kody Darcy ever was to “average” was in his freshman season, when he hit .275/.359/.449 in 24 games. As a sophomore, he hit .307/.409/.573 in 25 games; as a junior, he hit .429/.461/.571 in 19 games; as a senior, he hit .425/.511/.643 in 24 games. Thanks to his hard work and strong ethic, he improved every season since his first, giving him a cumulative .359/.436/.560 batting line in 92 games with the Chargers.

Darcy has a wiry 6’1”, 175 frame so it is highly likely that he will add additional mass in the future. At the plate, he stands upright with a very wide stance. His deep hand load works with his lower half to power his bat, using a naturally lofty bat path. He makes loud contact, with the ball jumping off of his bat; he has been recording hitting as high as an 88 MPH exit velocity. As he adds additional size, the gap power that he shows right now will start turning into home run power. He has average speed, running 6.9s in 60-yard dashes, but needs to refine his baserunning instincts, as he was 23/39 in stolen base attempts throughout his prep career, just over a 50% success rate.

Defensivley, he is a solid defender at short. His footwork and glove actions are smooth, and his exchanges are almost always clean and efficient. He possesses an above-average arm, but his are not always accurate because he generally throws from a lower three-quarters arm slot instead of a higher angle, giving the ball run as it goes to first.

He has a commitment to Xavier University.
