As the purveyor of Amazin’ Avenue’s weekly trivia quiz, I’ve been writing Mind Bogglers every Monday morning for the last three years. It’s with some sadness, but much gratitude to AA and its readers, to write that this will be my last one, as I start winding down my role as a regular contributor.
This quiz will be my 162nd for the site, which is a fitting number for baseball. Hopefully a baseball season’s worth of Mets trivia gave you more than just a way to kill some time on a Monday morning. I think that learning about a franchise’s history—including its many important but somewhat forgotten players—can help fans develop a stronger bond and sense of identity with their team.
I definitely experienced that as I became more familiar with the players who always found their way onto these lists—from one-hit wonders like Claudell Washington and Bernard Gilkey, to diamonds in the rough like Skip Lockwood and Dave Magadan, to stat compilers like Frank Taveras and Jose Vizcaino. It’s comforting to know that, even when the Mets have a season like the one they’re having now, future AA readers will be typing Jacob deGrom’s name into some Mind Boggler in the year 2036, or 2054, or 2092.
With that, I want to thank all the loyal readers who joined us for some Mets trivia every Monday, and to those who emailed me with anecdotes, stories—and, of course, corrections! Your feedback was always appreciated and please do stay in touch.
For this week’s Mind Boggler, we’re playing Name that Met, where we show you photos of 20 Mets players and ask you to name them. You’ll have five minutes for this quiz. As always, good luck, remember to post your time and score in the comments, and let’s go Mets!
