Jason Vargas had his best start of the year but the Mets still managed to lose 6-3 in Baltimore.
The southpaw was solid for six innings but the Orioles got on the board first when Vargas walked Renato Nunez with one out in the fourth. Adam Jones doubled and with runners on second and third Mark Trumbo hit a sacrifice fly to give the Orioles a 1-0 lead.
The Mets struck back in the fifth against Andrew Cashner with RBI singles by Kevin Plawecki and Amed Rosario with two-outs to put the Mets in front. For the most part however, the offense was stymied by Cashner and they struggled to get anything going.
The Mets’ lead was short lived because in the sixth Adam Jones tied things up with a solo blast against Vargas. Vargas finished the inning and ended his night allowing just the two runs.
Chris Davis untied the game against Bobby Wahl in the seventh. He crushed a solo home run which led to Wahl falling apart a bit. Sewald came in to stop the bleeding but he gave up an infield single to Nunez to give Baltimore a two-run lead.
They doubled that lead the next inning with one swing of the bat by Tim Beckham against Sewald who had a nightmarish outing. He departed unable to finish the eighth. Tyler Bashlor finished the inning but the damage was done.
The Mets attempted a comeback in the bottom of the inning when Brandon Nimmo led off with a triple. Todd Frazier picked up an infield hit to score Nimmo but that was as close as they would come and the Mets again failed to defeat a struggling Baltimore team.
Full recap to follow.
