The Mets took the lead on an Amed Rosario home run to start the game, and things just got crazier from there. Highlighted by a 10-run fifth inning, the Mets took the first game of their doubleheader against the Phillies, 24-4. The Mets’ 24 runs set a new franchise record for runs scored in a game. The previous record of 23 runs occurred on this exact date 31 years ago against the Cubs. Corey Oswalt had an okay start in which he went six innings while giving up four runs on four home runs. But, between the outrageous score and Brandon Nimmo’s finger, the start isn’t much more than a footnote.
The Mets scored 15 or more runs in consecutive games for the first time in team history and became the first National League team to do so since the New York Giants on August 2-4, 1933. The star of the show was probably Jose Bautista who hit and grand slam and drove in seven runs after coming into the game for the injured Nimmo. Ten different Mets had at least one hit and eight had at least one run batted in. Jerry Blevins is a member of both of those groups thanks to his eighth inning RBI single which represents the first hit of his major league career.
Going into the second game, the Mets have a shot at the record for most runs scored by a team in one day. The current record is 39 runs by the Texas Rangers against the Baltimore Orioles during their doubleheader on August 22, 2007. So, here’s to rooting for another 16 runs in game two.
