Final Score: Phillies 9, Mets 6 — No encore

The second game was much less successful than the first.

The record for most runs in a single day was not meant to be as the Mets dropped the second game of the doubleheader to the Phillies, 9-5. Steven Matz had a rough night in his first start in over two weeks since going on the DL. The lefty only went two innings while giving up six runs, four earned, and five hits.

In the first inning, it looked as if the Mets had picked up right where they left off in game one, but they didn’t do much on the offensive side from that point on. Amed Rosario and Jeff McNeil both doubled to kick things off and then Michael Conforto chipped in with a double of his own to bring both runners across the plate and give the Mets a 2-0 lead early.

Home runs were the name of the game again for the Phillies as Rhys Hoskins and relief pitcher Scott Kingery combined to drive in four of their team’s runs on their pair of homers. For the Mets, two runs driven in by Rosario and Conforto in the seventh were encouraging, as were the pair of runs brought in by Michael Conforto and Wilmer Flores in the ninth, but ultimately they weren’t enough to overcome the early deficit.

Full recap to follow.
