Final Score: Phillies 4, Mets 2—Helping Nola’s Cy Young case

Even when deGrom doesn’t pitch, the Mets still manage to hurt his Cy Young chances.

MLB: New York Mets at Philadelphia Phillies Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

It seems the Mets left all of their offensive prowess behind in the first game of yesterday’s double header. To be fair, they were facing a slightly better pitcher this time around. The Mets managed just three hits and one run off Aaron Nola as they dropped this game to the Phillies 4-2. Nola struck out 11 Mets in his seven innings of work.

Meanwhile Noah Syndergaard was not sharp tonight, getting hit hard in the first inning, giving Nola a three run advantage before he even took the mound. Syndergaard’s defense didn’t help him tonight, as Jack Reinheimer and Jose Bautista both had miscues in the field, playing out of their natural positions. However, Syndergaard also was as vulnerable to the stolen base as ever, allowing five of them, four of which were to players who had stolen a combined one base prior to tonight’s game.

Syndergaard had to throw a season-high 115 pitches and work around traffic to make it through 5 23 innings, but gave up just one run after the three-run first inning. Daniel Zamora—recalled straight from Double-A—had a successful major league debut in relief of Syndergaard, tossing 1 23 scoreless innings. He gave up a walk to lead off the seventh, but that baserunner was quickly erased by a double play. He also struck out two batters in his first big league outing, displaying his impressive breaking stuff.

The Mets scratched out one run in the eighth, the result of an RBI single from Austin Jackson to drive in Jeff McNeil; Jackson and McNeil were responsible for five of the Mets’ six hits on the night. But Pat Neshek pitched a scoreless ninth inning, working around a Jose Bautista single, to earn the save and secure the win for the Phillies.
