Jacob deGrom’s extraordinary season continued on Saturday, tossing a complete game in a 3-1 win against the Phillies. A day after Max Scherzer and Aaron Nola made stellar starts to state their case for the Cy Young, deGrom reminded everyone that he is the frontrunner, striking out nine and lowering his ERA on the season to 1.71. The only run he allowed was unearned.
Jeff McNeil was the offensive star. His fourth inning single led to the Mets’ first run, and he added an RBI triple in the seventh to tack on some insurance. McNeil added his first major league steal and a sparkling defensive play. Todd Frazier also had a big afternoon, going 2-for-3 with a double to continue his recent resurgence.
The win is deGrom’s eighth on the year, his third consecutive win to pull his record over .500 on the season. He’ll next take the mound Thursday at Citi Field, likely against Madison Bumgarner.
Full recap to follow.
