Final Score: Giants 2, Mets 1 — Zack Wheeler was great, but Dom Smith was Dom Smith

Wheeler continues his dominant streak against the Giants, but all for naught.

MLB: San Francisco Giants at New York Mets Andy Marlin-USA TODAY Sports

The Mets lost an absolute nail-biter to the Giants this evening at Citi Field, 2-1 in thirteen innings. Despite some absolutely stellar pitching, an utterly avoidable outfield play ruined the fun for everyone.

Zack Wheeler started for the Mets, and continued to look like a completely different pitcher than was on the mound for the Mets at the end of last season. Wheeler went X, striking out Y, and walking only one. The sole blemish against Wheeler came in the bottom of the seventh, when a bloop pop up off the bat of Alen Hanson plated the Giants’ first run.

The Mets scratched out their early run in the first inning. Amed Rosario led off the game with a single and, after an Austin Jackson strikeout, was driven home by Wilmer Flores’s 23rd double of the year. After the Giants tied the game in the top of the seventh, the Mets put men on base in both the seventh and eighth, but failed to bring in a run

The game went into extra innings, with some chances on either side, but no additional runs were scored until the 13th inning, when an inexcusable outfield play by Dominic Smith led to a collision with Amed Rosario, and led to the winning run scoring.

What a mess.

Full recap to follow.
