Final Score: Giants 3, Mets 1—Bumgarner, bummer

Jacob deGrom threw well enough to win, but fell in a pitchers’ duel.

MLB: San Francisco Giants at New York Mets Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

Jacob deGrom’s ninth win eluded him as the Mets fell 3-1 to Madison Bumgarner and the Giants to split a four-game set.

The Mets ace pitched well but surrendered a pair of frustrating runs. Steven Duggar crossed home in the top of the third on a passed ball that Devin Mesoraco argued had been foul-tipped. An inning later, deGrom appeared to send the game to the bottom of the fourth with a strikeout of Nick Hundley, but a dubious ball call from home plate ump Tony Randazzo extended the at-bat. Hundley walked, leaving the door open for a Bumgarner RBI double.

San Francisco’s hefty hurler allowed five hits in eight innings, his lone blemish a Todd Frazier home run in the seventh. Will Smith worked around a two-out walk of Jose Bautista, who had two hits, for the save.

In his 26th start of the season, deGrom allowed one earned run in six frames, amassing 10 strikeouts and dropping to 8-8 on the year. Tyler Bashlor struck out three in two frames but gave up a solo shot to Evan Longoria, and Drew Smith pitched a perfect ninth with a pair of strikeouts.

Full recap to follow.
