Zack Wheeler did his best impression of Jacob deGrom against the Washington Nationals tonight, giving the Mets seven scoreless innings despite not having his best stuff. He had trouble with his command throughout the outing, walking three while only striking out four, but managed to keep the Nationals off the board through seven innings. While he was hardly dominant, Wheeler found a way to get the job done, and really didn’t allow the Nationals to make much hard contact during his seven innings of work.
Roark was arguably the better pitcher through five innings, but ran into trouble in the sixth. After striking out Wheeler to start the inning, Roark gave up a solo home run to Amed Rosario, which put the Mets ahead of the Nationals 1-0. That would prove to be all of the offense the Mets would need, as the Nationals failed to score for their third straight game.
The Mets would add two more runs for good measure against the Washington bullpen on a Todd Frazier home run in the bottom of the seventh inning, and a Michael Conforto RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning.
The Mets’ bullpen performed admirably tonight, with Daniel Zamora, Drew Smith, and Jerry Blevins combining to give the Mets two scoreless innings in relief of Wheeler.
With tonight’s shutout loss, the Nationals have now failed to score in their last three games, having been shut out by Aaron Nola and the Phillies on Thursday, and again by Jason Vargas and the Mets last night.
