The Mets beat the Cubs this afternoon 8-1 at Wrigley Field. The Vargy magic continued, as Jason Vargas had yet another successful start, going five and a third innings, striking out six, walking two, and giving up four hits. Only an RBI single from Ian Happ would blemish Vargas’s start, along with his relatively short outing. But hey! Five and a third of good Vargas is far better than 8 of earlier in 2018 Vargas!
The Mets got on the board with a grand slam by Todd Frazier in the top of the first inning off Cubs’ starter Alec Mills. The Mets wouldn’t score again until the seventh, when Amed Rosario, Austin Jackson, and Jose Reyes all drove in runs, putting up a second four run inning for the Mets. Just as they wrote it up in Spring Training, right?
In the ninth, the Mets added two insurance runs off the bats of Frazier and Brandon Nimmo. Victor Caratini hit a two-run home run for the Cubs in the bottom of the inning, but it was too little too late for the Cubbies this afternoon.
Full recap to follow.
