This Week in Mets Quotes: Callaway says lack of run support might cost deGrom the Cy Young

Lots of interesting, funny, idiotic, and insightful things were said by the Mets—and about them—recently. Here are some of our favorites.

MLB: Game One-Philadelphia Phillies at New York Mets Adam Hunger-USA TODAY Sports

Your 2018 New York Mets: It’s embarrassing.

“It’s a tough loss. It’s embarrassing. We have got to do better than that.” –Mickey Callaway describing the Mets’ 25-4 loss [New York Post]

‘Any time’; how many times has this happened to you during your career?

“Any time you lose a game and you allow 25 runs and you lose 25-[4], you have to feel disappointed about it. You don’t see that too often.” –Jose Reyes [New York Post]

Narrator: “It was not.”

“We’re all healthy for the most part, and when we get out there and take the ball, it’s tough to beat us.” –Zack Wheeler [New York Post]

Definitely putting that last sentence in my annual self-review.

“You might as well ask for a bunch if there is not much out there because you also have team control through next season. I am not an elite guy, but I am decent for what is out there right now.” –Zack Wheeler [New York Post]

Not sure why Callaway didn’t just say ‘Cy Young’.

”I think that obviously [deGrom’s win total isn’t] indicative from what we’ve seen of Jacob and his performance this year. I don’t think that everybody shares my opinion on that, and it definitely could cost him something.” –Mickey Callaway [MLB]

According to FanGraphs, Asdrubal Cabrera produced $55 million in value during his time with the Mets in addition to an absolutely priceless bat flip.

“I feel good. It’s part of the game. I’m really happy because I leave with my head up because I do all the best for the Mets. I want to say thanks to the opportunity for being part of the family.” –Asdrubal Cabrera [North Jersey]

Your season’s going great when 3 hits, 3 BBs, 3 Ks and 3 ERs over 4 1/3 IPs is ‘solid’.

“I didn’t really know what to expect, so to go out there and feel that good was a plus. It’s kind of hard to say what you anticipate but I felt like I was really solid out there.” –Jason Vargas [New York Post]

Requisite – ‘…but if you try sometimes…’

“Obviously I would rather stay here, but it’s a business. I want to be here, but you [don’t always] get what you want.” –Zack Wheeler [New York Post]

It’s going to be tough but I think Brandon Nimmo will be able to step up and be an even good-er guy to make up for the loss of two good guys.

“Me and Familia sort of came up together, ever since we came over here, so it was tough because he is a good guy, a real genuine guy. When he asks you how your day is going, he actually cares about how your day is going, so that’s tough losing a guy like that. Cabby I think really did a lot for our big league team and he was a good guy, too.” –Zack Wheeler [New York Post]

In order to keep collecting insurance checks, here’s the quarterly ‘David Wright is progressing’.

”He’s doing good. He’s plugging along. Obviously still has a long way to go. I think the real challenge is going to be at some point when he actually has to play in some games. But he definitely is progressing nicely.” –Mickey Callaway [Twitter]

This would be pragmatic if I had any trust in Ownership and their Cerberus front office.

“We emphasized that in order to make a deal at this juncture, it was going to take a team to step up and pay a premium. We know the talent that we have, specifically on the pitching side. We were not going to move those players unless it involved considerable talent coming back in our direction.” –John Ricco [Newsday]

I’m assuming this is the same thing that the Wilpons say to their tax accountants.

“We were not only given the opportunity, we were asked by ownership to be creative and be open to all possibilities, including those types of impactful trades.” –John Ricco [Newsday]

Well this isn’t ominous or anything.

“I think I am going through a thing and trying to work through it. This stuff comes up throughout the season and I just have to find a way to find a way to get through it and I wasn’t able to do that today. [Asked to clarify ‘Stuff’] It’s just stuff you go through during the season. Good pitchers find a way to get through it and that is just what I am trying to figure out right now” –Steven Matz [New York Post]

Mets Tweet of the Week

SiteBot FacePalm of the Week

“Feel like Zimmerman was being really bush league Stepping out on Reyes, and then pretending to charge the mound. Somewhat seemed like he was having fun with it, but also seemed like he was rubbing it in a bit. Wouldn’t mind Thor putting one on his backside today.” –focker5183
