One of the more interesting trends of the last few years has been the widespread embrace of advanced analytics. This trend is evident in almost every aspect of the game, from bullpen usage to defensive positioning.
Another change that analytics sparked is in lineup construction. Most notably, teams are increasingly hitting their strongest hitters in the two-hole, a spot that was traditionally reserved for contact hitters with little power. For example, Jose Bautista—who certainly does not fit the mold of a classic two-hitter—leads active Mets players in a plate appearances in that lineup spot.
For this week’s Mind Boggler, we’re asking you to name the 15 players in Mets history with the most plate appearances in the two-hole. Comparing these players to the two-hitters in today’s game offers a telling look at how the approach to lineup construction has changed in recent years.
