The Mets were already down before the rain came, and when the rain left they were down even more and they could never catch up in their 6-1 defeat.
Jason Vargas had already allowed one run and had runners on second and third when a dark cloud blew over Queens. The game was delayed for over an hour and a half, and when the game resumed Paul Sewald was on the mound. He allowed both inherited runners to score which closed the book on Vargas. The lefty’s final line was a third of an inning and three earned runs.
The Reds piled on against Bobby Wahl who gave up a two-run home run to Phillip Ervin to essentially put the game out of reach in the third inning.
The Mets made an attempt at some offense when Jose Bautista singled home Brandon Nimmo to make it 3-1, but Sal Romano had no major issues the rest of the night.
The Mets bullpen settled down somewhat after Wahl left the game. Tyler Bashlor and Drew Smith kept the Reds off the board in their appearances, but Jacob Rhame gave up a home run to Dilson Herrera in the ninth to put a blemish on his two innings of work.
The bats came alive a bit in the ninth when both Todd Frazier and Brandon Nimmo singled, but they were left stranded and another loss was added to the Mets’ growing tally.
Full recap to follow.
